Who this group is for: If you are a woman who served in the U.S. Military anytime, anywhere, for any length of time you are welcome to join us. This space is meant to be inclusive, confidential, safe, secure, and a source of community support during the current pandemic. This group is not meant to replace mental health care, nor is it group therapy or a religious gathering. This is for those that are practicing, looking to practice, or interested in ancient, earth-based, indigenous, or Red Road ways of spirituality. We are all indigenous. Every one of us got to 2020 because our ancestors brought us here. There will be songs and prayers led by our elders and perhaps by other women veterans. This group is for women veterans who would like a safe and secure space to meet with other women veterans with the opportunity to nurture themselves.
Who we are: This group is hosted by the non-profit, Red Feather Ranch and facilitation is done in part by Paige Jenkins, MSW, Navy Veteran, & Founder of Red Feather Ranch. At this time our other facilitators are Native Elders and MSWs.
What this space is and is not: This is a safe place for spiritual and emotional support and community during the pandemic. We are not currently offering direct mental health services or individual support, but we may be adding those as needed and as it is available. This is primarily a peer support community. We only share our own experience regarding current challenges and what we are doing that seems to be working for us. While we may want to give advice to others, this is not the space for it. It’s important for each of us to stay in your own body, with our own emotions and our own experience. We are all on our own unique paths and we want to honor you and your path.
Where: Our current meetings are held on Zoom. Just after we started this healing room security concerns surfaced regarding the Zoom platform. We are taking every precaution to maintain security. We may move to another platform, but for now we are on Zoom. Because this is a new group and because we have never met before we ask that everyone come to Zoom via camera and microphone so that we can both see and hear you. At a later time, we may offer the option of joining by phone without video. This is a security measure we feel is necessary at this stage.
When: Group meets on Zoom Friday from 12:00-2:00 PM Pacific Time. Our meeting frequency and dates and times are subject to change. These meetings will continue as long as they are needed. If the group needs to be canceled for any reason, we will do our best to contact everyone in a timely manner.
Format/Process: Group will begin with a smudge and a prayer from our Native Elder, USAF Veteran, and Eagle Staff Carrier, Linda Woods, MSW, as she is available to participate. We will then go around to everyone for short introductions: Your name, where you are calling from, branch of service and something you are grateful for. Please note that our elders and other Native women may give a longer introduction as is customary in their culture. This is generally not a custom for non-Natives and is not expected or meant to be a source of differentiation.
We will then have a talking circle, where each participant has an opportunity to talk about a current challenge and/or current practice/tool you are using that is helping you through this time. We ask that participants use "I" statements during their shares. Everyone will have a chance to share without feedback. After everyone has shared, if a participant wishes to provide feedback to another member, they can ask that person directly. We respect each other's right to decline feedback. If you arrive/call in late to group please – please “lay low” until you figure out the discussion.
Due to the nature of our circumstances, some interruptions are to be expected (for example: cats walking across keyboards, children asking about dinner, etc.). Aside from these types of interruptions, we ask that participants be present and devote their full attention to the group throughout the Healing Room out of respect for each other.
CONFIDENTIALITY: “What happens in group stays in group.” Discussion outside of group about something that may have happened in group should respect the confidentiality of each group member. This a confidential space and Red Feather Ranch will not share your contact information with any other group participants or in any other way other than to communicate directly with you about our meetings. If you want to connect with other participants between meetings it is up to you to share your contact information with those you would like to connect with. If you do connect outside the meeting, we ask that you maintain confidentiality of everything and everyone that was in the meeting.
